Happy New Year to all our Friends!
We are very excited to announce that our newest Downey Family Clinic at Woodruff and Washburn will be open soon to serve the needs of the families, women and children of Downey. Additionally, we are also very honored to have been asked to open another clinic at the Reggie Rodriguez Park on Mines in Montebello.
New Years Resolution #1:
Lose about 25 lbs and lower my Blood Pressure eat more green & leafy veggies, bananas, salmon, berries, tomatoes, olive oil, whole grain cereals and breads. Limit carbs, ice cream and all forms of sugar. Walk the dog (It’s good for both of us).
Citadel Shopping Extravaganza:
Wow ! What a blast ! Thanks goes out to FHCCGLA’s Raquel Villa and her diligent helpers for making this year’s Citadel Extravaganza a super success. Just in time for Christmas, hundreds of stores gave incredible discounts, raffle prizes, delicious food –they even had wine tasting! Alan Dichosa and Susan Jennrich did great! On behalf of the kids of the Rio Hondo Boys & Girls Club, East LA YMCA, HP YMCA, Southeast Salvation Army Corps, Human Services Association, Help the Children, Cesar Chavez Elementary School and FHCCGLA- I’d like to thank the hard work and generosity of the Bicycle Casino, Commerce Casino, Kiwanis Club, Rio Hondo/Vernon Rotary Club, Bell Gardens Lions Club, The Landmark Seniors-Toymakers of Huntington Beach-all of you helped make Christmas 2011 very happy for many children. Their smiles and giggles told me “Thank you All”

Family Center Updates for December 2011
News to Me:
For many years I had no clue what was going on at the corner of Garfield & Gage here in Bell Gardens. The Family Health Care Centers started way back in 1925. It is a Federally Qualified Health Care Center meaning it will provide anyone, no matter if they have health insurance or not, medical care. They turn no one away. They work tirelessly to treat each patient with dignity and respect, all the while ensuring that the quality of care is of the highest standard. As with all nonprofit organizations we rely on the generosity of others to maintain services; and given the high cost of medical care we are especially grateful to all the companies and individuals who contribute to support our efforts.
Dear Santa:
Please send us a check for $500 in the name of a loved one so that we may give our female patients Mammograms and Pap Screenings. Please send us a donation toward the purchase of a Retinal Camera to check the condition of our Diabetic patient’s eyes. A Donation of any amount of money will allow us to pay for children’s and adult’s vaccinations & medications. Our address is; 6501 S. Garfield Avenue, Bell Gardens, CA 90201.

Family Center Updates for October 2011
The FHCCGLA wishes you a very scary and happy Halloween!
I hope the kids get a lot of candy , but make sure you keep them in your sight. They get really excited, love dressing up like Witches, Ghosts, Vampires, Captain America. My favorite is Vampira, Princess of the Darkness, remember her?
Cancer Awareness Walk October 7th:
Thanks to Jennifer, Magdalena, Ana, Raquel , Neighborhood Watch, The Bell Gardens Women’s Club, Calendar Vixens & Marie, BGI Farmers Market, BG Police Department, Councilmen Pedro Aceituno and Sergio Infanzon, we all had a spectacular event. Beast Cancer has touched all of our lives and we all need to recognize the many ways we can save our moms, sisters, wives and women throughout the world. According to actress Reese Witherspoon, “Every three minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, and that’s just not acceptable.” The importance of early detection and screening is a hot button issue that we have to be passionate about. You have a greater chance of surviving breast cancer if it’s detected early. Women over 50 and younger women who are considered high risk are recommended to get screened every other year. The American cancer Society casts a wider net, suggesting that women begin getting yearly mammograms at 40. For further information regarding early detection and beast examinations, contact our FHCCGLA Outreach Department.
Citadel Shopping Extravaganza:
October 22 was the big day and with the incredible help of our FHCCGLA staff, Board Members, Raquel Villa and the fine folks over at the Citadel Outlets-Susan, Allan, James and Diane worked very hard to make this 6th annual shopping day a roaring success. What I liked best was the feeling of anticipation and excitement. Great food and a feeling of adventure. The funds raised from the tickets will go to the FHCCGLA-what a neat concept!

Don’t Give Up:Walt Disney was fired for “lacking imagination” and went bankrupt several times before building Disneyland. Thomas Edison was told by his teachers he was “too stupid to learn anything”. Albert Einstein did not speak until he was four years old and didn’t read ‘til seven. He was considered “slow”, was a daydreamer and was expelled from school. Decca Records turned down the Beatles as ”just another guitar band”. Elton John was kicked out of a music industry exec’s office for “wasting his time” Just think, if these famous icons experienced failures had stopped them from pursing their goals… The world would be a different place for sure. Never give up your dreams.

On Monday July 25, 2011 Bell Gardens city council unanimously adopted a healthy vending policy to reduce the access of sugar-sweetened beverages available to youth in city facilities after testimony from members of the Los Angeles County RENEW Initiative .
The council heard from several proponents, including city staff and partnering local community-based organizations such as The Family Health Care Centers of Greater Los Angeles, Campaign for a Healthier Bell Gardens and California Center for Public Health Advocacy. They also heard expert testimony from the LA County Department of Public Health (sponsors of the RENEW Initiative) in support of health policy changes as a means of improving population health. Local youth also voiced their support for the policy.
The economic costs associated with being overweight or obese, and lack of physical activity cost LA County nearly $12 billion in health care and lost productivity in 2006, and these costs are on the rise. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health's RENEW initiative is working with cities like Bell Gardens and Family Health Care Centers of Greater Los Angeles to establish policies that will promote health for all residents.
Family Health Care Centers of Greater Los Angeles will continue to work with LA County Department of Public Health and the City of Bell Gardens to promote healthy living and eating through workshops for city staff and community members. http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/city-of-bell-gardens-adopts-healthy-vending-policy-1542596.htm
